The larger history of the military in the West has  been told numerous times by well-known authors such as Robert  Utley in The Indian Frontier, 1846-1890 (CH, May'84, rev. ed., 2003) and by the venerable Edward M. Coffman in his classic  two-volume history The Old Army (CH, Jul'86) and  The Regulars (CH, Dec'04, 42-2393). Nelson  (Clackamas Community College, Oregon City, OR)  adds new information to these two standard histories by  focusing attention on the numerous battles fought in  the Northwest, especially during the 19th century.  His history helps flesh out the fierce contest between  the settled tribes, large and small, that inhabited the  Washington and Oregon territories  and the invading white cultures, whether they were  Spanish, British, or American. Beyond his accounts of  these struggles, Nelson provides information on the  existing forts and makes a special plea that they be  preserved wherever possible.
